Prologue
She had been lonely too long.
He knew that, had seemed to sense it from the first, had felt the terrible unquenched longing in her soul, understood the crying of her skin for touch, of her body for union with another. He had known and had drawn her to him, seductively as a forbidden dream. They closed around each other in relief and forgetfulness, their embrace a silent agreement that this world was wholly their own, separate and inviolable. She looked into his eyes, the color of a cloud-shadowed sea, and the complicated became simple, untangled by the pure equation of desire and fulfillment. She looked into his face, and guilt and self-reproach dissolved, along with the memory of another face, other eyes, ones that haunted and weighed her down with unresolvable pain.
He knew that as well.
“You are with me now, Julia,” he whispered. “You must forget everything else. No one will ever come between us.”
“No,” she whispered back, “no one,” releasing herself to the tantalizing comfort of his body, the warm white enveloping softness of his bed.
A man and woman, lost in each other, unaware of the surveillance of a pair of sinister dark eyes that watched them in a glass, of the smirk of self-satisfaction that appeared in that glass as their image faded. They couldn’t see how those dark eyes glinted in triumph nor hear his malevolent chuckle: “Oh, yes, Dr. Hoffman. Do come into my parlor. You will find the web quite comfortable. And quite inescapable.”
Beyond the drawn shade of the looking-glass, they lay together. She breathed in his devouring power and didn’t flinch from it but raised her face toward it, to accede to it, to let it take her in. The blood in her veins burned through her body, burning away memory and despair, burning away guilt and pain and love and the agony of deprivation, all left in a trail of white ash behind the ravenous fire....
